According to an environmental assessment bulletin issued on Monday, Starfire Scientific Inc., the project’s proponent, must follow two conditions.
Flight operations must be conducted outside the calving/post-calving period for the Mealy Mountain caribou, which runs from early June to late July. As well, the company must confirm that caribou are not in the project area prior to the firing of the cannon.
The proposed staging area for the mobile artillery cannon is located approximately 8.5 kilometres south of the Labrador community.
According to Starfire Scientific’s website, the custom-designed cannon will be used to launch payloads into space for high-altitude sounding flights and to orbit small satellites.
