Work is underway to prevent the closure of the Wabush Recreation Centre.
It was announced recently that the centre would close at the end of December.
Wabush Mayor Ron Barron confirmed the decision to The Aurora around the third week of November. He explained that the centre costs the town about a million dollars a year to operate, and the municipality can no longer afford it.
In the past the Town of Labrador City and other stakeholders provided funding, but funding for this year didn’t materialize.
Barron says the decision was made to close. However since that news, there has been strong reaction to the closure announcement.
The centre has the areas only swimming pool, a bowling alley, a gym used for basketball and other sports, a weight room, teen centre and meeting rooms.
In the past week there have been meetings held in an effort to keep the centre open.
Labrador West MHA Graham Letto confirmed there have been a series of meetings and progress is being made.
Barron says he’s optimistic, but could not release any further information until the meetings are completed.
The Aurora will provide updates as they become available.
