Posters calling for a peaceful demonstration in support of striking workers at the Iron ore company of Canada have popping up all over Labrador West since late last week.

The many unions that make up the district labour council are asking their members and the general public to rally round the striking workers in a show of support.

A planned march this Thursday from Avalon Drive near the intersection of Route 500 to the main gate is planned for 5p.m.

The posters indicate there will be guest speakers at the event.

The members of local 5795 and 6731 went on strike in the early hours of March 27. One of the main issues is regarding the temporary workforce, the union says it wants no temporary workers on site. The company was given permission to use temporary workers on a trial basis for over a year, that agreement expired with the expiration of the last contract. The company is asking for a temporary workforce with the numbers reduced and say it feels it has made a fair offer.

The MHA for Labrador West, Graham Letto visited the picket lines on several occasions before taking an Easter break.

“I respect the strong mandate the membership has given the union executive and the negotiating team,” Letto told the Aurora. “I am working very closely with union President Ron Thomas and the company, to find an early resolution that is fair and acceptable to both sides.”

Steelworkers at the Iron ore company of Canada in Sept Iles Quebec, local 9344 have given notification of their intent to strike April 10th.
