Special Olympics Summer Games start Thursday in St. John’s
St. John’s — Some 334 athletes will compete at the 2017 Special Olympics Provincial Summer Games Thursday to Sunday.

ST. JOHN'S, NL — The Bay Roberts under-17 squad was a force to be reckoned with at a recent Newfoundland and Labrador Ball Hockey Association provincial tournament.
Bay Roberts defeated Gander 6-0 July 9 to claim the provincial title. Kyle Petten collected a goal and two assists for the winning side, with other goals coming from Ethan Crosbie, Kyle Tetford, Lucas Russell, Dawson Mercer and Braeden Carlson. Mercer was named tournament MVP, while Riley Petten snagged top goaltender honours.
Bay Roberts finished with two wins and a loss in the round-robin portion of the tournament. The team opened with a 4-2 loss to MMBHL, then notched consecutive wins over Labrador Impact (3-1) and Gander (2-1).
In the female provincial tournament, the Whitbourne Aces made it to the final and came close to winning it all before losing in overtime to Home Hardware 3-2. Aces goalie Kelsey Shute and defender Shelby Baker were named tournament all-stars.
