Driver in fatal accident in Lark Harbour charged with impaired driving

A 45-year-old man from the south shore of the Bay of Islands has been charged with two counts of impaired driving causing death in relation to a fatal accident in Lark Harbour early Boxing Day morning.

The man is in police custody and will make his first appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook Wednesday.

The provincial court docket for Wednesday indicates the man charged is Walter Joyce, who is set for a bail hearing on two counts of impaired driving and two counts of impaired driving causing death.

According to the Corner Brook detachment of the RCMP, a 59-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman were walking on Little Port Road when they were struck and killed by the pickup allegedly being driven by Joyce.

The couple was from Lark Harbour. Police have not yet released their identities. A family member did confirm for TC Media that Joyce is related to the couple who died.

According to the RCMP,  Joyce currently lives and works in Fort McMurray, Alta., but was home for the holidays.
