Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, and in order to provide correct information, we wish to make a clarification on a statement that appeared in your article “Housing crunch causing stress” published in The Aurora, August 17, 2010.

The article indicated that Hope Haven “… wasn’t able to secure the funding for 10 new affordable housing units, …”.  We just wanted to clarify to the public that the maximum allowable funding had been offered and made available to Hope Haven through the federal/provincial Affordable Housing Program.  We want to ensure there is no misinterpretation or misunderstanding of the statement printed in the article.

NL Housing was and is very supportive of this project, and in September 2007 approved $1 million for Hope Haven under the federal/provincial Affordable Housing Program, for supportive housing projects, as well as another $117,000 under the Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP).  Hope Haven indicated they were unable to obtain a contractor for this project.

In fact, because we truly wanted to see a project developed in Labrador West, in 2009, NL Housing went beyond the maximum provided to other groups, and offered an additional $500,000 in affordable housing funds to Hope Haven.

However, we were later advised by the Hope Haven board that they did not intend to proceed with the project.

We thank the Editor of The Aurora for the opportunity to make this clarification.

Sincerely,

Dennis Kendell

Executive Director

we have all heard of the housing shortage in lab west not all of us can afford the high cost of houses here. for those of us who want to stay here and work and have our family here it hard. why does the council have a sub division where houses does nbot excede the 100,000 dollar mark so people can have a home that they can afford I am certain that there are developers out the who will come to build houses and not have high prices that arwe out of reach for the common man. its nice place to live and have a family but If things are not in place to keep people here the the towm will loose now it seems that contractors are the main thing for the towm not the people what happens when it goes back to normal there people who are renting places will cry for someone to come and rent..we need a sub division or sell people land have a place where people can buy land a build there own house .there are many solutions out there.we need to put people first not contractors
