Dear Editor:
To Canadian Cancer Society Friends and Supporters in Labrador West
I would like to take this opportunity to send a sincere thank you to all volunteers, donors and supporters of the Canadian Cancer Society in Labrador West, especially those who have participated in the annual Relay For Life event. You have done an amazing job! Your efforts have made a positive difference in the lives of individuals and families coping with cancer.
I am writing in response to the recent article on Relay For Life in Labrador West. I found myself wanting to tell the people of Labrador West how much their support of the relay is valued and how it has helped so many people from their community and throughout the province.
Relay for Life is the Canadian Cancer Society's signature event and is more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to get together with family and friends to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones who lost their battle with cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease. Relay is fun, fulfilling, and your participation gives tremendous strength to our mission; the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. Overall, the costs associated with running Relay for Life are low because of the number of events in the province and the volume of participants. All funds raised stay in the province and support the programs and services offered by the Canadian Cancer Society. Each and every person in Newfoundland and Labrador has equal access to all CCS programs regardless of where they live.
The 2009 Labrador West Relay For Life was a huge success. The funds raised at this relay and relays throughout the province allow the Canadian Cancer Society to continue to offer many vital programs and services, especially Daffodil Place which has been a home away from home for so many people from Labrador and the entire province. Daffodil Place provides support for those who have to leave their home town to travel to St. John's to receive cancer care. Since opening in July 2009, Daffodil Place has welcomed more than 600 guests from over 200 communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
Other services provided to those living with cancer in our province includes practical support products, which are free of charge. Support products include wigs, turbans, shawls, hats, and temporary prosthesis. As well, support groups and cancer information are available to those who need it. Many people from Labrador West have availed of these services in the past which has been most helpful to them in their time of need.
The Canadian Cancer Society also supports cancer research. Last year in Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society invested $49 million in crucial cancer research across the country. Cancer research is working. Today, 62% of people diagnosed with cancer will survive. That is a dramatic reversal from the 1960's when only 33% of patients survived.
In conclusion, you should be very proud. Your efforts with Relay for Life are indeed benefiting the people of your community living with cancer. Again, I want to thank you for your support. You are making a difference and by working together, some day we will win the fight against cancer.
Sincerely,
Albert Pelley
