Letter to the Editor -
Dear Editor:
My buddy and I went to Goose Bay on Feb. 2 and came back on Feb. 6. On the way over we encountered some Innu hunting caribou in the closed zone where the endangered Red Wine caribou herd is know to be.
On the way back we came across where they had camped. Forget the fact they are hunting in a closed zone to the detriment of the Red Wine herd, the mess they had left on the side of the road was almost unimaginable. They had a 100-metre area littered with sausage cans, oil bottles, garbage bags, plastic bags and almost everything you can imagine. They must have gotten some caribou because they had the paunches left five meters from the road.
These are people who talk about treading lightly on the environment in which they live and are against anything that would endanger the environment in which they live. Give me a break! If they aren't prepared to walk the walk then they shouldn't talk the talk. They talk about conserving wild life for future generations but they are hunting the Red Wine caribou herd into extinction.
I would like to think that these are only a few bad apples in the Innu Nation and they were doing it on their own, but I sincerely doubt it in light of what Peter Penashue, deputy grand chief of the Innu Nation said: "We're making a point that this zone is not required for the health of the Red Wine caribou herd."
