Special to the Aurora

Hundreds packed the Labrador City arena on New Year’s Eve to welcome in the new year. With so much to do it was an event not to be missed and a great way to end off the year with the family.

Evelyn Ryan and her team of volunteers organized a great night full of non-stop fun for everyone.

There were inflatable games like the fire truck slide, Dragon and Velcro Wall. The grade four to seven zone was a hit; play mini hockey with the AA Carol Lakers, learn magic from Mariam Khormi, and try your shot at some minute to win it games. Nine-year-old Emma Meade started the night off singing a song for the crowd, getting everyone excited for a great night.

The main event of the evening was some amazing magical entertainment by the very talented Mike D'urzo. He wowed the crowd with some incredible tricks on stage, making tables float and turning fruit into money. He continued the show all night, long moving through the crowd with some great tricks up his sleeve.

Family games kept everyone involved and having fun, with relay races, rock paper scissors competitions and Zumba, lead by Sabrina Hunt, to get everyone pumped up for the big count down.

The cake was cut, the glow sticks and noisemakers were passed out and it was time for the count down.

As the hands of the clock moved towards midnight, and the countdown moved to the final seconds, the arena ignited in celebration! Auld Lang Syne had everyone dancing and singing as they welcomed in the new years with their family.

Everyone then filed outside to witness the amazing spectacle of the new year’s fireworks. The Labrador City Fire department put on a great show in the sky for all the people to “ooh” and “awh” at.

For these families, the Labrador City First Night celebration was a great way to end the old year and welcome the new.
