"I think council is lacking a voice for young families with children and I want to be that voice."
There's Kim Pike's answer to why she decided to run for the seat on council in the March 16 by-election.
The 31-year-old mother of three small children says she feels compelled to do her part to make sure Labrador City is a great place for all children to grow up in.
"There are a lot of new families coming into Labrador City; most of them are young families with young children," Pike outlined. "I have some concerns that I would like to be a part of resolving. My big concern right now for the younger families is no daycare. That is one example of something I would like to help bring to this town."
Pike achieved her diploma in Business Administration last year after completing the course online. She is a stay-at-home mom and enjoys working on different committees and being involved with the community.
"I like being with people and contributing," she said. "I sit on the executive of the hockey association, I am on the executive of the soccer association, I sit on the A.P. Low School Council where two of my children go. And I represent A.P. Low on the Labrador School Board."
Pike said she thought about running in the general election last fall but wasn't sure if it was the right time; when a by-election was announced she didn't need much time to make up her mind.
"I decided I want to be active in my community," she said. "I think it's important for me because I always had an interest in my community and there's many things I've identified that I would like to work on."
Pike says she would like to contribute her energy to the recreational needs in Town and going after enhancements to parks.
"Right now we have one major park and we need to work on promoting that park and maybe even developing another one. I would like to check into have more green space in the town. I would like to work on bringing more activities to life that involve the whole community in general so we can get the feeling of community back to where it should be."
Support from family and friends has been strong and Pike says she has plenty of spirit and enough time to spare to keep up with the commitments a seat would involve.
"This is something I really want to do," she said. "The demographics have changed here in our town and I want a help make this town a great place for the young people coming in because they are the future and I will work hard and do my best."
