Penney for thought

He has a long history in Labrador City and local businessman John Penney has decided to take a stab at a seat on council in order to give back.

"My wife Ellen and I have lived in this community for 37 years now and it's been good to us," said Penney as he explained his reason for running in the Labrador City municipal by-election. "I feel I have the time and the ability and desire to work with the present council that's in place-under the leadership of Janice Barnes-to maintain and enhance the infrastructures that are in place that makes Labrador City the great community that it is."

Penney said he isn't gravitating to any specific files; he would like to just jump in and see where he fits best.

"I think, if I am successful, I will figure out where I can help most," he said of committees he might like to be part of.

Penney says his long career as funeral director in Labrador City has offered him some insight into problems with air travel and the air ambulance service. He said he has seen his share of frustration in some of the families he has dealt with over the years on those services.

And his business has allowed him to see some positive services as well.

"I also have gotten to know those fellows at the town depot and how well they carry out their duties, they are good people," he said. "The Town operates well like that in emergencies. I would like to work to maintain that because I wouldn't like to see this town fall behind."

Penney says he and his wife (both natives of western Newfoundland) don't have plans to leave Labrador City; it's their home.

"I plan on staying here," he said. "And, I would like to give something back to the Town now. I have the full support of my wife in this and, she too, said the time is right for me to do this."
