Councillors update community on dialysis, fire and street reconstruction

The Town of Wabush is getting ready to do $592,000 worth of work in the industrial park.

H.J. O'Connell Construction was awarded the tender for the project in the May 26 council meeting for $592,178 including engineering costs, and Martina Gale, acting town manager, said most of the work will be done on Third Avenue in the Wabush Industrial Park.

Wabush mayor Jim Farrell said he's glad work in the industrial park will finally be finished; he noted it has needed an overhaul for quite some time.

"The streets in the industrial park are in bad shape as everybody knows," he said. "Last year we didn't do any work, so this year we're finishing it off."

Farrell explained Wabush will pay for 10 per cent of the project as part of its Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement with the province and this is the last year of the three-year deal.

Dealing with dialysis

In other news, Coun. Cheryl Hardy said she attended a dialysis committee meeting recently and the group is exploring funding opportunities.

She noted Lab. West needs two dialysis machines - one will be used as a backup - and there's a possibility the Royal Canadian Legion will donate money from its annual poppy campaign to help purchase the dialysis equipment.

The Aurora has also learned a new committee is being formed through Labrador-Grenfell Health to help deal with dialysis needs in the community.

Ozette Simpson, Chief Operating Officer at Captain William Jackman Memorial Hospital, was contacted for an interview, but declined to comment.

New building rules in Wabush

Building permits were also on the agenda at the Wabush council meeting last week.

Martina Gale, acting town manager, said the onset of spring usually results in construction and she is reminding residents to apply for the appropriate permits before building.

Anyone with a permit, she noted, must have it displayed in the window and she was also pleased to report the province has signed off on the regulation amendments to garage heights and side yards in Wabush.

The amendment to the development regulations allows residents to build an accessory building that is six metres high rather than 4.5 metres high, and also changes the minimum rear yard depth from 14 metres to 10 metres, which gives citizens an extra 20 feet for development.

Fire, bike and ATV reminders

The Wabush councillors also issued a number of reminders to residents May 26.

Coun. Curtis Hatch started the discussion and explained the Wabush Fire Department responded to two fire calls recently - a wood fire at the water tower and a grass fire.

He urged citizens to keep an eye out for kids playing with matches and said even though there's been a lot of snow and rain recently it's still dry enough to start a fire.

Coun. Ron Barron said he's also heard a lot of complaints over the last few weeks about people running stop signs and motorbikes tearing through the community at high speeds.

He said Grenfell Drive seems to attract speeders and the noise coming from the machines is disrupting residents in Wabush.

Coun. Cheryl Hardy noted she's heard similar complaints when it comes to quads.

She said some people use the bikes on the road and it's frustrating to see younger children using the machines.

She explained there are more and more reports of ATV injuries in the province and she encourages the public to discourage their children from riding the machines before there's an injury or fatality in Labrador West.

Coun. Barron said all the issues lately seem to come down to enforcement and he hopes the RNC steps up patrols to help counter problems with bikes and ATVs in the community.

Assault RNC Report

Last Wednesday at 11:50 p.m. members of the RNC in Labrador West responded to a complaint of an assault at a residence on Cavendish Crescent in Labrador City.
As a result of an investigation a 21-year-old Labrador City man was arrested and charged with two counts of assault, two counts of uttering threats and four counts of breaching his probation order.
He made a court appearance and was released on a recognizance with conditions.
He is to appear in court again on June 16 at 9:30 a.m. in relation to the charges.
